DESIGN FOR BANDS FEATURED : : Attack! Attack! bassist and all round cool guy Will Davies shares with us his views on touring, the music industry and plans for the future …
“The fact is that if you want to try and carve a career as a musician these days you need to be good, be able to diversify and have a way to support yourself that works around playing in a band”
My name is Will Davies and I’ve been playing bass touring and recording with bands and solo artists since I was 19. I’ve worked with producers like Sylvia Massey (Tool, Skunk Anansie), Michael C. Ross (Counting Crows, Christina Aguilera), Stuart Richardson (Lostprophets), Romesh Dodangoda (Funeral for a Friend) etc… The last 5 years I have been a member of Attack! Attack! UK which has seen me tour the UK, Europe and Australia and having the time of my life.
That’s the plus side of being a musician and the payoff for years of hardwork and sleeping on floors and shitty hotel beds with your drummer.
There is however a myth that ‘if you’re in a band then you must be rich’. The days of of rock n roll excess are pretty much over unless your band was around in the 80s and 90s! The fact is that if you want to try and carve a career as a musician these days you need to be good, be able to diversify and have a way to support yourself that works around playing in a band. With the internet and social media more and more bands are getting exposure, the industry is shrinking financialy and everyone is struggling. The recession hasn’t helped things either so being able to do other things both in and outside music that pay the bills is a nescessity. When I am not away touring or recording I play in Function bands and in restaurants doing the odd jazz trio gig. Not rock and roll and some people would say it wasn’t cool but for me it’s better to be playing and working with music than sitting in an office doing temp work!! I’ve also started working engineering/producing bands at Streetlevel Studios in Cardiff which is a new door opening in music to explore having only ever been on the otherside of music production.
Some people teach thier instrument, backline tech for bands or set up business’s providing a service for bands. For example Neil (Starr) singer in Attack! Attack! runs his own merch company which coincides with being in a band.
Obviously some bands get lucky and become huge international acts and that would be great if it ever happened but back down on earth it’s important to keep things going until that does/doesn’t happen!
